I just have to say that's flippen' awesome and good luck with that!

That is so exciting! How much do houses cost in that area?

Thanks - I was rather shocked, even though I knew he had really good credit

A house the size we want runs about 100K-ish... so that would be plenty.

Whoa! Awesome!

You can get something quite nice for that.

I have a bunch of recommendations for you, but, on the chance you've heard most of 'em, I'll keep quiet for now and let you figure out what to do with this wonderful news. ^ v ^

We are going to talk tonight... I really want to do this, even though it is probably foolish.

From: [identity profile] alicetheowl.livejournal.com

For what it's worth, I don't think it sounds foolish. I think it sounds wonderful, and like something else to look forward to. I'm very happy for you. ^ v ^

Thanks :)

It's just a very big step, though one we were planning on take this year.

I so want a house, then I can hang stuff up, and do whatever we want, and have parties :)

Just the whole aspect of having a space that belongs to you and knowing you don't have to move from it for the rest of your life if you don't want to would be enough to make it worth it, for me.

From: [identity profile] eoywin.livejournal.com

Yeah, it does for me too...

I was looking through Yahoo Homes, and there were a few that would work out great of us... We have already talked about how we want at least a .5 an acre of land, and 3 bedrooms if there isn't a basement.

From: [identity profile] alicetheowl.livejournal.com

Half an acre is a good-sized yard, and definitely feasible. Have you thought about whether you'd consider a manufactured home?

From: [identity profile] eoywin.livejournal.com

Yes, we had also talked about buying a bit of land, and putting a log cabin home up.

Todd's parent's house is a manufactured home...

From: [identity profile] alicetheowl.livejournal.com

Just one word of warning: all houses go up in value, except for manufactured homes. They always lose value. For that very reason, many banks are reluctant to finance a loan on a manufactured home, and if you have to move and sell it, you may end up losing money.

If you're going to be there a while and the bank's agreed to finance no matter what, you haven't a thing to worry about. But this is just something to bear in mind.

And the land the home is on WILL go up in value during that time.

Log cabins are really great, though. ^ v ^

Yeah, I'm not sure what we will end up with. We have to find a realtor, and look through houses.

The internet is great, but a lot of the ones on yahoo homes seemed to be not through a realtor.

May I recommend The Buyer's Agent?

I've done some poking around, and they seem like they'd be the most reliable realtor in town. Mostly because they're more of a co-op of realtors who work for the buyer (rather than the seller).

You'll find them at http://www.ashevillehomebuyer.com, if you're interested.

Thanks!! I'll have to put a link on my computer at home :)

By the way, I know you want a house pretty near where you work, but property costs go down outside of Buncombe county. I'm not sure why. So you might not want to limit your searches to just Asheville if you want to get the best value for your money.

Or, you could just ignore my ramblings.

From: [identity profile] eoywin.livejournal.com

We've looked outside of Asheville - the house we are hopefully looking at over the weekend is in Fairview (or something like that).

Though with gas prices the way they are, we don't want to be too far away.

From: [identity profile] alicetheowl.livejournal.com

Yeah, I wouldn't advise giving yourself a half-hour commute to save a few thousand. Counterproductive, at the very least.

Fariview isn't too far from Asheville, though. Good spot with decent real estate out that way.
